Steam Outage Schedule
West Virginia University’s annual steam outage will occur solely on the Evansdale Campus this year. Work will begin May 23, 2016 starting at 7 a.m. Steam will be returned to the campus on May 27, 2016 by 7 a.m. This outage will affect domestic hot water, heating water and may impact HVAC systems. Backup hot water systems will be turned on in facilities that have this capability.
Facilities management maintains approximately 4.5 miles of underground steam line infrastructure and approximately 1,200 major steam line isolation valves, expansion joints and components feeding our campus buildings.
The steam outage is critical to
ensure we maintain our campus reliability and allows us to perform scheduled
preventive and corrective maintenance that cannot be completed during
normal operation. Maintenance is performed on both the steam and domestic hot
water heating systems, pressure reducing stations, valves, distilling units and
the condensate systems in these facilities.
Completion of these maintenance items significantly reduces the need for costly
equipment replacements and increases the life and reliability of the equipment
of our campus systems.
We will be monitoring facilities affected by this outage and making adjustments
to minimize the impact to the facilities. The following buildings will be
affected:
