Recycling Services

West Virginia University currently recycles paper, cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic, aluminum and steel cans, toner cartridges, fluorescent tubes, electronics, and scrap metal. The recycling team is available to assist with special pick-ups of voluminous material, including that of a confidential nature. In partnership with WVU Printing Services, Recycling Services offers document destruction services for secure documents.

Please contact Barbara.Angeletti@mail.wvu.edu to arrange this service or for general recycling information, or call 304-293-9500.

Acceptable paper guidelines: ALL paper is acceptable as long as it is not soiled with food waste (no dirty paper plates or pizza boxes, please!). Acceptable paper includes newspaper, magazines, manila folders, glossy junk mail, non-corrugated cardboard (soda cartons, letterhead boxes, etc.). Paper clips, staples, etc., do not need to be removed.

Blue and Gold Mine Sale

Each year in May, WVU hosts an end-of-the-year student move-out sale, known as the Blue and Gold Mine Sale, the proceeds of which benefit United Way of Monongalia and Preston Counties. WVU staff collects material from every residence hall on campus, City of Morgantown crews collect material from off-campus students, and it is all taken to Milan Puskar Stadium. Once it’s all there, United Way volunteers sort, price, and execute the sale. In 2007, 42 tons of material was collected, and $14,000 raised for United Way. In 2008, 52 tons of material resulted in $16,200 for United Way. Volunteers are always needed for this event, which is the largest single recycling event that occurs in the state of West Virginia. To volunteer, please call the United Way office at 304-296-7525.

Mountaineers Recycle Program

WVU is proud of its Mountaineers® Recycle Program. Cardboard, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans are collected, both in the parking lots and inside Milan Puskar Stadium, and recycled to benefit WVU Children’s Hospital.Volunteers distribute bags to fans and tailgaters in the parking lots, asking them to place their plastic bottles and aluminum cans in them to be recycled. Bags are left at the tailgating site and are collected post-game. After three seasons, this program is responsible for the recycling of 37 tons of game day waste

Volunteers are needed for all seven home football games. If you would like to volunteer, please visit http://simpleforms.scripts.wvu.edu/sf/mountaineersrecycle/.

If you have any questions about volunteering or need more information, please contact Brett White in the Center for Civic Engagement at 304-293-8761 or by email at brett.white@mail.wvu.edu.
